Old-fashioned isn’t necessarily the obvious quality you look for when deciding which company to hire to create the bathroom, bedroom or kitchen of your dreams. But when the ‘old-fashioned’ concepts of a family-orientated enterprise and the ethos of providing the best service are mixed with the latest interiors technology, then it’s an unbeatable combination. Those are the key ingredients which have made Saksons Interiors’ entry to the market such a success, and which will no doubt ensure that the plan to expand and extend the business will come to fruition.

Saksons is owned and run by Adam Rhodes, the sales director who has a background in design technology and extensive experience as a designer and project manager, and Tony Atkins, the installation director whose career to date has been at the hands-on end of the business. Between them they have more than 40 years in the sector, and they have known and worked with each other for many of those years. Adam said: “We have both worked with a lot of different companies over the years so we have seen different ways that companies operate. “We both felt that we wanted to bring our own skills and values to a new business, where we could carry out every task to the level we were personally happy with, so we made the decision in 2014 to set up together.”

Last February they took over a site in Hospital Fields Road, York, and from an empty unit have created a stunning environment which showcases their range and eye for detail and design and is where clients first learn about the ‘Saksons standard’. And they have already established themselves as premier partners for some of the top names in interiors, including German appliance maestro AEG. “It’s case of them selecting us as a partner,” said Adam. “It’s quite a coup - they are amazing products, the finish is second to none, the range is extensive and they are incredibly innovative. On top of that they offer five-year parts and labour cover as standard, which shows how confident they are in their work.”

Saksons works with Daval Furniture of Huddersfield for all the cabinetry, and it is that link which provides the cornerstone of Saksons’ offer. Adam said: “We work hard to use local and UK products and materials when we can, and we were thrilled when Daval, a great local business, chose us to work with. “It means that we can offer a truly personal service. No two kitchens, bathrooms or bedrooms are alike and because everything we provide is bespoke we can tailor each element to the customer’s requirements. “Nothing presents a problem, whether it’s a loft room with sloping ceilings, or a room with awkward alcoves or angles, because we design and make everything as required by each job.”

Silestone sinks and worktops, top-quality brands Laufen of Switzerland, Miller of Sweden, Heritage Bathrooms and Aqualisa digital showers all feature in the envy-making showroom displays and Saksons is also the local main dealer for Roper Rhodes, a topnotch British bathroom supplier. These design heavyweights are also at the cutting edge of product innovation, building top-end technology into the everyday with heated bathroom mirrors to banish misting-up, some of which also include discreet radios and iPod docks, clever pop-up sockets in worktops, sensor lighting, remote controlled showers, a four-way tap providing hot, cold, filter and boiling water, touch-sensitive and synchronisedopening cupboard doors and more practical issues such as toilet and kitchen sink and worktop designs which give germs no place to hide. Clever though all that is, it is the personal touch that brings all these components together to make each kitchen, bathroom or bedroom entirely personal to the client. “We have this thing called the Saksons standard,” says Adam, “which runs through everything we do, from the first appointment with the client, through the design and installation and beyond, with our two-year guarantee on all our work.

"We are a close-knit team; we have trusted and experienced installers who are involved in the whole job, rather than just coming in to do their bit without appreciating the overall design. “Tony is on site almost every day working with the installers, and I project-manage everything, including all the services and even building work which may be required. My dad’s a builder so he helps, too!” With Tony’s son helping out with marketing, family values run through the business and influence the whole set-up.

The pleasure for us comes in knowing that we have done a good job, that we have provided great products, taken care in the design and installation and got everything right. You build up a relationship with a client over the time it takes to design and complete a project and they trust you. It is an incredible feeling then when it is finished and it all comes together. There’s an incredible degree of satisfaction.
